Commonly found in the Australian outback the native hop has thick and leathery leaves that can be boiled and applied to relieve ear ache. Australians. Dodonaea viscosa has also been traditionally used by Aboriginal Australians to treat toothache, cuts and stingray stings.

Dodonaea Viscosa as an extremely hardy species is able to re-sprout from its base. The stand-out horticultural feature of this species are the brilliant colored flower capsules.   Also called the sticky hopbush it is known to tolerate arid desert conditions, so it can be available when other medicinal plants have died back through drought. Early Australians settlers used the Native Hopbush plant to ferment beer, hence its name.
